Teach them your children..

And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 11:19

What a powerful verse concerning parenting. We are told in the Bible we should teach our children about God.. On Sunday mornings though one or possibly two of the following: Sunday school, AWANA children’s program, praying before meals or in a private school. No, the Bible does not allow us to out source the responsibility of “teach them” to anyone else. All the above things can be great means to assist you and me but they do not have the weight of responsibility that is placed on our shoulders to “teach them your children”.

We are not only told what to do concerning our children but we are told when to do it. We are to be “speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up”. What a great challenge for me as a dad. Do I just talk about God in designated spots? Do I believe there are only certain locations where God takes roll? My children are young and we do not have in depth discussion, however we are going to talk at them about something.

Here is a great question for us parents. Is it natural for you and your spouse to talk about the things of God. Would it seem odd to your spouse if you started a sentence with “God has been so good to us…”. Would they laugh at you thinking you were joking if you said “let’s pray about this”? If you are unable to speak openly and comfortable abot God with your spouse you are unlikely to be obedient to the above verse with your children and will most assuredly not be speaking to unbelievers about our God.
