Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: Proverbs 3:9

As a family we are reading through Proverbs together. Knowing my wife will soon (with in the next 3 weeks) deliver our second child, Tinsley, I have desired to become more disciplined in our family devotions. In my personal reading & writing plan I am also in Proverbs, thus today’s blog entry.

I am asking God to show me how to honour Him with all my “substance”. The verse here does not say honour the Lord with you life, time, energy, of many of the other things it says in the Bible. It tells me to honour Him with my substance.

I am surrounded by “substance and fruits”. Since we have been expecting a daughter it seems like the substance has been coming in faster and pinker than ever. I want to use all of our substances for God or get rid of it. We normally look at things by can we afford it, do we have room for it (sometimes we forget to ask this), do we like it, and have we convinced ourselves we need it. I need to take things through the filter of “how can this substance be used to honour my Lord”!
