Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; I Kings 3:9-11
Often times when I think of Solomon I immediately think of his down fall. I think of how his heart was turned from God and turned to the hearts of the gods of the women he took as wives. However, at the beginning of First Kings we find a different Solomon. We find a young man with whom there is much to learn.
During this time of year it is very easy and convenient to you get you mind and heart on earthly things. With all the commercialism of Christmas we have a tendency to entertain thoughts of things we would like to have. I have found myself looking for ways to get new gadgets.
Solomon had an opportunity to ask for anything. It did not mean he would get anything, but he was given the chance to ask. I want my prayers to be more like this prayer. Not asking for earthly things that would benefit me but spiritual things that would allow me to be a better minister of the Gospel. I do not need a Kinde, but I do need to be more kind. I do not need a Wii but I am mush in need of wisdom.
