David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. 1 Samuel 22:1,2
I love reading about this place, the cave of Adullam. I get excited everytime I see it come up in my Bible reading. It is a wonderful place where men go in at the lowest points of their lives and come out as mighty men who help lead a nation. There are so many stories in the Bible I wish we had been given more details about and this is one of them. I would love to be able to review the surveillance tapes of this cave.
Leaders lead (period)
David went into a cave and quickly became surrounded by a motley crew of men. He did not whine and complain about them. He did not send out resumes for a different cave. He didn’t even pick the ones he like the most and run deeper in the cave away from the rest. He simply “became a captain over them”.
Did the men come to him because they saw God’s protection on his life? Did they come because they knew of the tremendous potential he held? Did they come because of of their buddies went there and they got word that he was getting help in his life? I do not know why they came but they came. They came and David lead them out of the cave an unto a better life.
I want to be the type of servant leader that could start anywhere, with any group of people, and walk out with a group of mighty men. People are drawn to free resources. Whether it be books, conferences, or people they like to receive resources that are free. I am not a mentor for hire. I offer my services to the students around me for free. I ask that God will make me a “distressed,debt,discontented, people magnet” as David was so that I can see God transform them into mighty men!
