Out of nothing.
Earlier this week I finished reading through the Bible once again. Now as I would tell the teenagers “read, meditate, obey, repeat, as needed”. So I will start from the top and enjoy the ride again. If you have ever read through the Bible you know it is much like the best roller coaster you have ever ridden. As soon as you come to an end you want to run to gate and get on it again. So for greater accountability sake and with hopes to encourage someone out there I will openly journal some of my thoughts as I travel through. I will follow my pastors example who is nearly 300 days ahead of me and comment on a verse a day. You can follow his devotional thoughts at www.visionbaptist.com/blog
2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
I learned in school a word that didn’t hold as much meaning to me as it does today. That word is “Ex nihilo”"Ex nihilo” is Latin for “from nothing.” The term “creation ex nihilo” refers to God creating everything from nothing. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth Genesis 1:1. Prior to that moment there was nothing. God didn’t make the universe from preexisting building blocks. He started from scratch.
We learn in Hebrews that by faith we understand that the world was “framed by the word of God”. It is so amazing to know His words are that powerful and I am able to read His words!
3Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
As it says in verse 2 that the “Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” I am so thankful to God to feel this same Spirit moving in my heart. I am overwhelmed with joy when I read of all that God did without mention of man. In the first 25 verses God alone creates the universe. After He finishes He then creates man.
I am sure Adam had no trouble, when he took his first look around the garden, that there is a Creator and it was not him. I am astonished that some look at creation and it is so evident to us that their is a Creator and others ask for yet more evidence.
This afternoon I will go down to an area in Atlanta called Cabbagetown. Our church is venturing through God’s power to see a church planted in that community. Not much is happening yet. You might say it is “void and with out form”. However, I have seen my Heavenly Father take much less (nothing) and create much more (the universe) than humanly possible. I am thankful to God for this reminder!
