Let my people go, that they may serve me 0
The first time I noticed God’s purpose in setting the children of Israel free was when I read the Story of His Glory by Steven Hawthorne in the Perspectives book. I had never really put much thought into it. The children of Israel were in captivity so of coure they needed to be free – but why? As the Lord says in Exodus 9:13-16 “that they may serve me”. They were released to serve! They were released that, “that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.”
13And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.14For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.
15For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth.
16And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
Letting the people go was not God’s primary concern, however, it was how He chose to accomplish the chief end of man – to Glorify Him! I have even read that every plaque showed the Egyptians god inferiority to the True God of Israel. God is show casing His power. We will see this in Exodus 12 when God states “gainst all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.”
When I walking close to God I have a burning passion to see the lost come to Christ, as I should. I have a “continual sorrow” for my people. However what is God’s primary purpose in redeeming a people? It is so that we are free to worship and serve Him! Salvation is so much more than a future real estate decision for mortals. It is about the Creator breaks the bond of the fallen world and restoring/reconciling us to our rightful roles as worshippers.
This Friday night I am praying for many teenagers (hopefully some from Alpharetta, Norcross, and Cabbagetown) to come to Christ at the Youth Explosion hosted by Victory Baptist Church in Loganville, GA. Many of our teens are concerned for their friends and working to see them come to hear the Gospel. I pray that these students will come to Christ and when they do they will realize they have been set free for a glorious purpose!
