Screen shot 2009-10-12 at 11.02.18 AMI recently signed up for a free Dropbox account. It has quickly became very helpful to me and I see great benefits from using it for ministerial purposes. Best part it is free. If you start using it and find it unnecessary than you just delete it and not be out any money!

Techie Definition

Dropbox is a storage application and service operated by Evenflow, Inc. The service enables users to store and sync files online and between computers.[1] Dropbox has a cross-platform client (Linux for x86 and x86_64, Mac, Windows and the iPhone) that enables users to drop any file into a Dropbox folder that is then synced to the web and the users’ other computers with the Dropbox client.[2] Files in the Dropbox folder may then be shared with other Dropbox users or accessed from the web. Users may also upload files manually through a web browser.[3]

A free Dropbox account offers 2 GB of storage. Users may upgrade to 20 GB, 50 GB or 100 GB by paying a monthly or yearly fee. The total amount of storage space of both the free and fee-based accounts may be increased up to 3 GB for free accounts and 6 GB for fee-based accounts by referring others to the service.[4]

Simple Definition

Dropbox is a free way to have a back up for all your files. If you do not have the money to buy an external hard drive this is a perfect alternative. It is only 2 GB for free. However, by referring friends (ie this blog) you can earn up to 3.5 G of space. It is more convenient than an external hard drive becuase you do not have to carry it with you. It allows you to get your files from any computer connected to the internet.

Ministry Uses

  • Share folders with coworkers (permission forms, pictures, artwork)
  • More folders without a jump drive. (I can never find a jump drive when I need it)
  • The ability to send links to large files.
